Making Money Internet

Yesterday's announcement that Google's Eric Schmidt will be handing the CEO reins back to co-founder Larry Page came as a shock, but with the company's aura of invincibility fading, and its core business showing signs of age, the time was right for a change. There was "an example every hour," of how triumvirate decision-making by Schmidt, Page, and co-founder Segrey Brin was hurting the company, Schmidt said. If Google wants to assure investors and consumers that rumors of its looming insignificance have been greatly exaggerated, there are a few key things that Larry has to do.

No. 1: Fix Search

Google's cash cow is its online-search advertising business, but the search results are starting to look awfully spammy. Between content farms that flood the Internet with meaningless search bait and black hat optimizers that use sleazy tricks to get top results, there are entire industries devoted to gaming Google's algorithms.

People who depend on Google for their livelihood have started to notice, and consumers are showing signs of getting antsy: There is a reason Microsoft's Bing quickly picked up 12 percent of the search market, and it's not because of its Gossip Girl product placements, or even vastly superior search results. Google has also drawn some ill will with an aggressive, some say illegal, tendency to push its own services to the top of the page.

It looks like Larry gets the seriousness of the problem. Friday, on day one of his regime, Google acknowledged the issue in a blog post, even as it downplayed its severity. "Reading through some of these recent articles, you might ask whether our search quality has gotten worse," said principal engineer Matt Cutts. "The fact is that we’re not perfect, and combined with users’ skyrocketing expectations of Google, these imperfections get magnified in perception. However, we can and should do better."

It will take more than a wonky breakdown, but it's a start.

No. 2: Find Growth

The aforementioned cash cow is still so lucrative that it's easy to forget that Google has never really succeeded in any other business. Despite the ubiquity of Gmail and YouTube, they are not yet successful stand-alone businesses. YouTube only recently made it into the black after incurring hundreds of million of dollars in losses over the years.

It's not like Google isn't aware of the problem. Witness the frenzied diversification into anything that looks hot: cars that drives themselves, social networks, and yesterday's long-expected news of a Groupon clone. But trying everything hasn't produced much of anything.

Larry needs to ditch the side projects and focus on the most promising ones: the Android mobile-phone operating system, and the mobile ad network AdMob, which even makes money from iPhones as it serves up 2 billion ads a day.

No. 3: Stop the Brain Drain

Here's an enigma for Larry to unravel: Why does a company with five-star chefs, high-tech nap pods, and free massages have to throw millions of dollars in cash money at employees to get them to stay?

Part of the problem is Google's convoluted management structure, which Page is clearly trying to fix. If a team has been working on an amazing project for a year, only to hear that it overlaps with someone else's pet project, who wouldn't want to jump ship? But it also has to do with Google's size and a potentially fatal inability to face up to an unpleasant reality. From what we hear, there's reluctance from some of the old guard to accept that Google is a massive corporation now.

There is a major intangible at play as well, something that may not be easy for someone who is more Chief Engineer than Chief Executive to grapple with. If the ambitious go-getters that make it through Google's onerous interview process sense that the cool, sexy projects are happening at Facebook, Apple, or some stealth VC project with no name, then no amount of money is going to keep them on side, no matter how big a money truck Google backs up to their cubicle.

Which leads to....

No. 4: Consider a Personality Transplant

Tech bloggers were smitten with Eric Schmidt, but for all the wrong reasons. Sure, he grew Google into a $200 billion behemoth, but he also had a weakness for creepy Big Brother jokes delivered so dryly that no one could be sure he was joking. Contrast that with the controlling and charismatic Steve Jobs, surely one of the best salesmen in modern history, with a reality distortion field that may have made enemies but also bestowed an ineffable cool on his entire company.

Larry, by all accounts, makes Eric Schmidt look like Steve Jobs.

Ken Auletta explains:

He is a very private man, who often in meetings looks down at his hand-held Android device, who is not a comfortable public speaker, who hates to have a regimented schedule, who thinks it is an inefficient use of his time to invest too much of it in meetings with journalists or analysts or governments. As C.E.O., the private man will have to become more public.

Google's engineer-driven approach to new products has been a long-standing problem. (Google Wave, anybody?) Unlike Apple, it seems to build for engineers and developers, not consumers. That's great when you're making an open source mobile platform like Android, which is hot on the iPhone's tail due to its openness and potential ubiquity across multiple carriers and devices. It's not so great when you made everyone on Gmail opt into Google Buzz ’ or for creating fanboys and girls who want to use your products, even if they have to anyway.

Either way, Larry, you're going to need some charm to lend Google the same cool factor it had last time you were in charge. Maybe start by looking up from your Android phone every once in a while.

Tailored online reputation management Plans

When agencies or persons fall prey to unfair competitors, irate ex-employees or disgruntled prospects, then a SERM gets to be essential inside the economic survival of a business enterprise.

Firms like SERMs are vital in preserving, and in some instances salvaging and restoring agencies or person's reputation and excellent name.

Making Money Scams

We’ve all done it. We’ve all believed, if only for a second, that we could become rich without work.  That we could build a business that runs on auto-pilot. That we could live on a beach in Maui while the checks come rolling in. You know what I’m talking about: “Living the dream.” The ultimate goal of success without work.

Unfortunately, we all know that’s not reality. As small business owners, we work day and night to reach that dream for ourselves. And we know, through experience, that there’s no “easy button” we can push to achieve it.

But isn’t it frustrating to watch as others continue to succeed by selling the dream that we know isn’t possible?

You know who I’m talking about. Those guru-type slimy marketing promotions that tell you things like, “Make $14,023 a month at home in your underwear with no effort!” or “Making money by pushing buttons has never been easier with this revolutionary system!”

We all know those systems don’t really deliver on their promises. The only people getting rich are the gurus selling those scams. But the truth is that the reason they continue to offer these scams the way they do is because it works. Humans like to buy the dream.

Take a deep breath. I know, it’s frustrating. Because that’s not you and me. We don’t make promises of overnight success. We run real businesses where we try to solve real problems for our customers.

But there’s an opportunity to learn something here and use it to our advantage. If you look at why people buy, it’s usually for a different reason than you think it is. For example, people don’t buy a fancy diamond engagement ring because of how it looks. They buy it because of how it’s going to make their lives better and how it’s going to make the other person feel. They’re buying “forever!”, not diamonds.

In another example, people don’t buy Nike products because they’re any higher quality than Converse or New Balance or 100 other brands. They buy Nike because Nike sells “winning.” They’re buying the dream. They want to be labeled winners.

So next time you see a guru trying to sell something you know is full of false promises, don’t get angry. Instead, use it as a lesson to think about what you sell, and more importantly, what and why people buy from you. Then use that lesson to improve your marketing message for more sales, leads and publicity.

Making Money Scam

Sometimes the obvious isn't clear. We've covered the theft of homes via "hanging judges" in mortgage courts before. At the heart of this confusion (or scam, depending on whether you're a victim or a beneficiary), lies MERS, the virtual mortgage registry that's replaced the handling of mortgage ownership in this brave new slice-and-dice derivative world.

Matt Taibbi, who will have a new big piece about this in a coming issue of Rolling Stone, provides this handy metaphor for understanding what MERS actually is. Here's one slice:

Imagine, say, a family of twelve, two elderly parents in Iowa and ten adult children scattered in different states all over the country. Mom and Dad on the farm own one Ford F-150 that they owe $300 a month on. Every month, the truck gets passed to a different family member, who in turn becomes responsible for the monthly payment. But no matter who has the car and whose turn it is to come up with the $300, the truck stays in Dad's name and the money, in the end, comes to Ford Finance via Dad's checking account.

Looking at this as an individual and unique case, you wouldn't think there was much that was inherently wrong with this setup. Obviously the family arrangement violates the spirit of many laws and procedures [interesting list of spiritual violations here]. But again, looking at this as an individual case, not many people would say any of these "violations" were major moral transgressions, if they were really moral transgressions at all. After all, this is family!

But once you take this setup and institutionalize it, and employ it everywhere on a vast scale, it becomes seriously problematic. This is particularly true if, say, Pop begins allowing his kids to "rent" the car out to non-family members, so long as they kick a small fee upstairs. Say it's March and Pop gives the truck to son Jimmy in Toledo; in April Jimmy gives the truck to his buddy Rick in Akron, charging the $300 payment plus a $20 convenience fee. May: Jimmy gives the car to his girlfriend Trudy in Phoenix, telling her to wire $300 plus another $20 back to Pops in Iowa; she in turn lends the car to her occasional lesbian love interest Madison, who begins renting the car on a day-to-day basis in Tuba City as part of her family's Painted Desert Resort and Tourism business, etc. etc. And she's now kicking the fees back to Iowa.

Within a year Pop is buying fifty vehicles an hour and shuttling cars to new customers all over the country, collecting millions in fees every day; he becomes a billion-dollar corporate fixture, hiring the entire local Elks club to come with him to work as support staff.

So now, to take this already absurdly overwrought metaphor one final painful step further ...
I knew the Elks were involved. Tempted to click through? I am, and I've already read it.

And for fans of straight talk, he provides this handy summary in easy-to-memorize form. The problem in a nutshell:
In short, the mortgage industry considers MERS owner enough to foreclose on you, but not owner enough to be sued, or reasoned with, or even to provide basic customer service.
That's MERS. Thanks, Matt, for making the painfully obvious painfully clear.

Bankers.

At this point the AFCA National Championship Trophy has already been awarded to Auburn via the Tigers' 22-19 win over Oregon in the BCS national title game Monday night in Arizona. But as we all know, there is still another unbeaten out there, and this year it is TCU.

TCU finished its 13-0 football season with a two-point win over Wisconsin in the "Granddaddy of Them All," the Rose Bowl, nearly 10 days ago.

The Horned Frogs joined a growing list of non-BCS teams to go unbeaten and not even get a chance to win or lose the title on an actual field.

Boise State did it last year.

The year prior it was Utah.

Neither team got its chance to prove its worth, though Utah did send Alabama smarting home after the stomping the Utes handed the Tide in that year's Sugar Bowl.

So is this year's unbeaten non-BCS squad any different than either 2009 Boise or 2008 Utah?

No, not really. But after seeing how the supposed top two teams in the nation looked Monday night, there should be a fight to give TCU a share of the title in the final AP poll.

Oregon looked shaky on both sides of the ball. Offensively the Ducks couldn't run the ball, and Darron Thomas was wildly inaccurate at times. On defense they did not stop the run, allowing well over 200 yards on the ground.

Making Money Marketing

The news that Tapjoy, formerly Offerpal, raised $21 million in funding last week, is not only a feel-good comeback story for a company tainted by the Scamville Facebook case. It also shows there’s a big opportunity to be had by helping the freemium model expand on mobile. In addition to Tapjoy, there are other companies hoping to ride the freemium app boom.

For example, W3i, a longtime web application recommendation service, is looking to help match up advertisers who want to promote their mobile apps with developers who are looking to make money through in-app purchases with a new ad-funded payment platform for iOS. Similar to Tapjoy’s platform play, W3i is looking to exploit the growth in in-app purchases by uniting developers, advertisers and users.

A user who wants to buy virtual currency or goods in an app can choose to install another app in lieu of payment, which the advertiser delivers to the developer upon installation. I talked with the CEOs of both companies about the opportunities in alternative payments for mobile apps and why they feel that they’re on to a big opportunity, helping fuel the in-app purchase economy and taking advantage of its growth.

Mihir Shah, CEO and president of Tapjoy said a year ago, the company began testing out a freemium model for one of its mobile games Tap Defense a year ago and found that within a week, it was making six times more money going freemium than paid with traditional display advertising. Eventually, the game was making 10 times what it was before. The news spread, and other developers came on board with Tapjoy’s virtual currency model. Shah said the market for freemium mobile apps went from about 20 a year ago to about 2,500 today, of which he said 90 percent use Tapjoy. It’s unclear if these numbers are accurate, but as I reported a few months ago, we’ve seen a big spike in the number of freemium apps on the top-grossing rankings of the Apple App Store

Tapjoy employs its platform on iOS primarily and is also on Android. The company’s move to mobile has attracted some 400 developers, who are now partnering with Tapjoy for its in-app currency platform. And big brand names are also lining up with Tapjoy because of its success in helping distribute apps. Companies like Kayak, Fandango, Tapulous and Groupon pay for each user who installs their app in exchange for virtual currency. Shah said it only works with apps that have already been approved by Apple so it helps assure users the downloads are legitimate. He said the messaging is also made clear when users agree to download a paid app in exchange for currency. That has allowed Tapjoy to avoid the problems caused by the earlier Scamville episode, in which Facebook users were encouraged to use offers to pay for virtual currency in Facebook games, sometimes unwittingly buying things or subscriptions.

Shah said alternative payment through offers is still emerging; most iOS users still pay for virtual goods and currency directly. But he said it’s a significant business that will grow over time. He also said while many freemium apps right now are games, the model can work for many other types of programs. Communications app Pinger offer users currency for the service in exchange for app downloads. “The amount of content that is switching to this (freemium) model is astronomical,” said Shah. “And the top of the curve is not leveling off.”

This helps explain W3i’s move into this space. Andy Johnson, CEO of W3i, said its W3i Ad-Funded Payment Platform is trying to create a win-win-win for developers, advertisers and users. He said developers are able to better monetize their apps, a struggle in increasingly crowded app stores. Advertisers can get better distribution of their apps and insight into their marketing efforts while users are able to get something for free, which is overwhelmingly how they like to obtain things.

W3i is just getting started but has a lot of experience in helping distribute desktop apps. The company, which launched in 2000, has built a profitable business out of its InstallIQ app installation manager, which has helped W3i hit 500 million app downloads in its network. Now, W3i believes it can take its learnings to mobile, which Johnson believes can be an even bigger market.

“We see the mobile platform as the dominant platform moving into the future,” Johnson said. “We think this entire application distribution ecosystem is just beginning and there is so much market created each day, we don’t think there is one company that owns it.”

As I wrote about last week, in-app purchase revenue on the iPhone is now basically on par with paid download revenue, according to Distimo, an app analytics firm. With in-app purchases expected to be the dominant revenue driver for mobile apps, it’s smart for Tapjoy, W3i and others to try to take advantage of this momentum.

Money Making Websites

Christmas cards get more and more expensive every year so if you‘re looking to save money on cards this year, there are a few useful websites where you can create and print template-based printable Christmas cards directly from the website or download high resolution PDF files for printing. Avery half-fold card stock prints well in inkjet printers and they look just as good as the real thing.

I’ve located 5 sites that I found fairly accessible and basically free to use, although there are many others out there that ask for money.   But there is no need to pay anything when you have 5 sites like these that offer free printable Christmas cards.

id="more-60642">

123printcards

One of the easiest and straightforward card printing sites is 123printcards. That’s right, in three easy steps, you can customize the title, add a thoughtful message and print our your card on letter size card stock.

style="text-align: center;">

The site has 38 different styles of cards, featuring cute, festive and colorful holiday drawings. Some layouts are color intensive, so they may not print well on regular typing paper.

Another linked page on the site enables you to add a photo to one of eight printable Christmas card templates, featuring images of Santa Claus, snowflakes, snowman, Christmas tree, ornaments, winter scenes, and more. The size of these cards are 5×7, and are useful for Christmas card invitations, seasonal and personal greetings.

KeepandShare

KeepandShare has a page of nine Christmas cards of assorted layouts that can be printed on card stock.

style="text-align: center;">

You can download them as single high resolution PDF files and print them out or send them as eCards. Each card has 2 pages in the PDF Christmas card file, so it’s easy to print out. First print out the first side, setting your PDF software to print page “1″. Then flip your paper stock over and put it back in the printer and print page “2″. You don’t have to register on the site to use the resources.

AmericanGreetings

AmericanGreetings offers a more advanced card printing service, in which you can customize templates in their online Create & Print editor.

style="text-align: center;">

You can add photos, artistic elements, customize text, and change font size on the front and inside cover the layouts.

style="text-align: center;">

You can use the service and website for free on a two week trial basis, which enables you to print your card layouts directly from the site. You can also post your Christmas card right on your Facebook account or use it as an e-card.

ActivityVillage

ActivityVillage includes a collection of a dozen layouts that can be printed directly from the site or downloaded in PDF format. From there, you can hand write your greetings and add art elements.

style="text-align: center;">

These cards are geared more towards kids and maybe your office co-workers. The site also has resources for classroom printables, including holiday posters, coloring pages, games, jigsaws, stories and poems, etc.

Christmas Greetings Ideas

If you’re looking for some inspirational messages for your Christmas cards, check out Printable Greetings. It includes an handful of messages like, Friends and family are like the tinsel on the Christmas tree, they provide the sparkle for the season.

style="text-align: center;">

For additional sites with charming message greetings, check out my MUO article here and for more ideas on season’s greetings, check out Simon’s 3 Sites to Make Funny Video Greeting Cards.

The printable Christmas card sites listed above are the most accessible resources I found, but if there are ones you know about, please share them in the comments section below.

"Heading into the first week of the NFL playoffs and the NFL wants to talk CBA. Sad that NFL headlines dominated by this," he wrote.

Of course, most labor negotiations are marked by continued sniping—something that's become more immediate in the age of social media. But with the advantage of being able to control the means of distribution (e.g. TV partners, the NFL Network and team and league-run websites), the owners have a larger platform on which to position their message.

While many players have taken to social media to present their concerns they have yet to find a broad medium in which to make a statement. Since the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints opened the season with every player holding up one finger in a show of solidarity, there haven't been as many widely reported union responses. Not that they haven't been made, they just seem to have a tougher time finding their way to the general public.

All of which could add another layer of intrigue to this year's playoffs. A recent post on Sports Media Watch reported that 65 of the top 100 sports broadcasts in 2010 were NFL games—including eight of the top 10—meaning the league dominated television sets during the year. That supremacy is only likely to get greater during the playoffs, giving the players the best chance they've had to state their case since opening weekend.

Here's a chance for the players to give the fans an idea of what they could be missing if there's no NFL football in 2011. Hence the reason the NFL is doing its best to state its case to the fans right now. After all, people are willing to pay good money to see Mike Vick and Tom Brady light up defenses, but very few would drop two nickels to watch Jerry Jones or Arthur Blank pace the sidelines.

In the end, the issues will be settled behind closed doors at the negotiating table. But the side that can draw the most public support generally wins the most concessions. Ownership has made its play. Time to watch the players respond.
